Driving revenue and empowering individuals to reach their full potential have defined the career of Thomas Kastrup for the last three decades.
Rising to the C-level in BH Media Group was a culmination of many years in the newspaper/digital media industry. During the nearly 20 years he spent at what became Berkshire Hathaway media companies, he has transformed the way business development is conducted. After spending a foundational decade at the Kansas City Star in Kansas City, Missouri, Thom leveraged his experience as a District Sales Manager, and became a driving force at the Omaha World Herald, the region’s top news and entertainment source.
By fostering a culture of service to the customer, Thom propelled advertising revenues in the early 2000’s as he progressed through several promotions. He rounded out his career with operational oversight of call center operations where he dramatically improved metrics attainment to ultimately enhance the customer experience.
Being heavily involved in the due diligence surrounding Berkshire Hathaway’s acquisition of World Media Enterprises Inc. resulted in a year assignment for Thom when he traveled each week to Richmond, VA to integrate the advertising sales team. Based on outstanding performance and proven leadership skills, Thom was promoted to the C-Suite at BH Media where he currently serves as Chief Revenue Officer and Executive Vice President. He leads the revenue-generating sales efforts across the entire enterprise, including 31 newspapers and their associated digital delivery. By being a champion of robust sales training, underscored by a culture of customer service, Thom has been instrumental in the integration of proven sales techniques across all local sales offices.
Thom has been heavily involved in professional associations and board assignments, including the Local Media Consortium and the Inland Press Association. As a University of Nebraska-Lincoln alum, Thom graduated with a Bachelor of Journalism, which set the stage for his future career in advertising sales.
A life-long resident of Nebraska, Thom cares deeply about giving back to the community. He has served on the Journalism Advisory Board for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, as well as serving as a Professional Advisor for the journalism program at Northwest Missouri State University. He has been a board member of Campfire Girls in serving the needs of children born to first generation immigrants, and he has also supported Aksarben’s scholarship fundraising efforts.
In his free time, Thom enjoys spending time with his wife, Stephanie who is a school principal, along with their son who attends the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Integrating acquisitions, driving a transformational culture focused on the customer, and propelling revenues/profits have been the focus of Doug Hiemstra during his C-level executive leadership roles at BH Media and former companies.
Starting his career as a CPA in public accounting, Doug soon realized his future would be in driving performance in an operational leadership capacity. For several years, Doug led finance, operations, and information systems in the manufacturing arena, with leadership roles at Gate City Steel Corporation and ASARCO (American Smelting and Refining Company.) During that foundational decade of his career, Doug was instrumental in centralizing finance and other functions via the establishment of a shared services model, reducing headcount by 25% and dramatically lifting profitability. From there, Doug joined the Omaha World-Herald (later BH Media) where he spent the next 19+ years in multiple leadership roles with transformational oversight of 30+ newspapers and digital sites. His most senior positions included Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and Executive Vice President overseeing the corporate office including other C-Suite positions. Major accomplishments include robust M&A efforts that culminated in more than a dozen acquisitions, which virtually doubled the company’s size and required an inspirational leader to integrate cultures, processes and systems.
Although growing revenue and aggressively mitigating costs in support of a $550MM+ organization were the tenets of Doug’s leadership success, he consistently carved out time to inspire, mentor and lead a high-performance team of executives who placed integrity and customer service in the forefront of every business decision. Doug earned the respect and trust of fellow executives, suppliers, peers, and employees due to his transparent and genuine communication style.
A life-long resident of Nebraska, Doug cares deeply about supporting his local community. As a Tocqueville level supporter of the United Way, Doug has demonstrated his deep commitment to philanthropy. As an industry leader, Doug was past President of the Better Business Bureau’s Corporate Board, and its Omaha Board. In addition, Doug serves on the Corporate Board of the Inland Press Association, and was a past President on the Board.
In Doug’s free time, he likes to golf, visit friends, and make memories with his wife and family, especially his six young grandchildren.
